SUMMARY:January 20th Club Meeting: Sadako Renewable Project
DESCRIPTION:In July 2024\, the bronze statue of Sadako Sasaki was stolen from the Seattle Peace Park\, which is located in the University District. The statue commemorated Sadako Sasaki\, a Japanese girl who died of leukemia 10 years after the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima in 1945. While hospitalized\, she folded 1\,300 paper cranes\, a symbol of peace\, hope and healing in Japanese culture. The statue was erected in 1990. Right away\, people started bringing and hanging strings of paper cranes all over the statue\, to the point that oftentimes you could not see the statue. \nThe statue was sawed off at the ankles and stolen in July 2024. A community effort to replace the statue\, renew the park\, and promote peace has resulted in the Sadako Renewal Project. A new artist\, Saya Moriyasu\, was selected in May 2025. In her presentation to our club\, she will describe her plan for the Peace Park\, which will include features that: \n\nRespect the relationship to place\nUse safe\, durable materials that cannot be damaged and are not at risk of theft\nEducate the visitors to the park and encourage meaningful and respectful behavior\nIncorporate an interactive design\nPromote inclusivity and social justice\n\nNeedless to say\, this is a program you won’t want to miss! \nPay for your lunch ahead of time: (Lunch Ticket for 1)\nhttps://swipesimple.com/links/lnk_a84fa3719a05ec214219eb5d9616e30e

SUMMARY:March 10\, 2026: Zachary Weaver and Rotarians for Civic Participation
DESCRIPTION:TIME: 12:00 Noon\nLOCATION: ZOOM\n\nWhat if every person serving in government began their day by reading The Four-Way Test? What if every voter reflected on these four questions before casting their ballot? What if every law were held to these same standards? As Rotarians\, we don’t bring politics into our Clubs—but we can bring the spirit of Rotary into civic life. If you are a Rotarian who cares about civic participation\, Zachary Weaver invites you to join your fellow Rotarians in advancing a culture of truth\, fairness\, goodwill\, and benefit for all. In a world of rising division and diminishing trust\, let’s share our timeless values with those who are seeking integrity and hope. \nZachary Weaver is President of the Rotaract Global Service Club\, where he leads strategic initiatives connecting Rotarians to civic renewal efforts\, and convenes “Rotarians for Civic Participation” gatherings featuring youth civic leaders and established democracy organizations. He also develops messaging centering Rotary’s Four-Way Test and history as healthy democracy in action. Zachary is also Director of Democracy in a Box\, where he created an AI Navigator to help align civic initiatives with Rotary’s 4-Way Test and 7 Areas of Focus\, the IEP’s 8 Pillars of Positive Peace\, and UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. He also established the “Design Your Own Internship” model for youth civic leadership development.
